Long-Term Planning
York Tech embarked on a long-term planning process in June 2024, which coincided with the approval of a feasibility study by Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates. Please follow along as updates are posted on this page.
York Tech moved from a three-academy model in 2008 to a one-school model in 2009. This switch allowed enrollment to grow from approximately 1,400 to 1,700 high school students. However, it also created some operational issues, such as:
Security and safety concerns due to multiple entrances
Poorly located High School Office and Nurse's Office
Insufficient student and faculty parking
Inefficient cafeteria and serving lines
Equipment and supply storage issues
Additionally, demand for comprehensive technical education has grown significantly over the last decade, but the number of students York Tech can accept hasn't increased since the switch to a one-school model. This has led to York Tech accepting fewer than 50% of high school applicants in recent years. For example, 1,077 prospective high school students applied to York Tech for the 2024-25 school year. Due to space limitations, only 483 of those students (44.8%) were accepted.
In summary, York Tech needs to solve several operational problems with the current building and find a solution that will accommodate a larger student body.
The Joint Operating Committee approved a feasibility study to be conducted by Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates (CRA), an architectural firm based in Mechanicsburg, PA. CRA has worked on numerous schools in York County and has an extensive background in educational planning.
At the conclusion of the feasibility study, CRA will provide options for how to solve the operational issues of York Tech's current buildings and increase the number of students it can serve. The options may include reorganizing within the existing footprint, renovating the existing footprint, or building additions.
Additionally, at the request of the Lincoln Intermediate Unit 12 (LIU 12) and York County's superintendents, the feasibility study will explore the possibility of adding an LIU 12 facility building to York Tech's campus. This building would provide the LIU 12's services to York County students.
The primary goal of the feasibility study is to have a plan in place if state or federal funding should become available to help subsidize any potential facility improvements.
