PIAA Update

Overview

The PIAA recently updated its 2025-26 constitution and bylaws at the end of January 2026. Effective immediately, per the updated bylaws concerning sports not offered at vocational schools (page 14, section four):

  • A student-athlete enrolled full-time at York Tech must participate in sports at York Tech or one of York Tech’s co-op agreement partner schools, provided the PIAA sport in which the student-athlete wants to participate is offered by York Tech or its co-op agreement partners.

  • When a PIAA sport is not offered by York Tech or its co-op agreement partners, students enrolled full-time at York Tech may participate in the sport through their school district of residence, provided the school district of residence offers said sport.

  • As of February 2026, the sports for which students could exercise this option are:

    • Competitive cheer

    • Girls’ flag football

    • Lacrosse

    • Rifle

    • Swimming and diving

    • Water polo

Need to Know

When a full-time York Tech student chooses to participate in a sport that is not offered by York Tech or its co-op agreement partners:

  1. The student-athlete will not be considered a member of York Tech’s Athletics Department while participating on another school’s sports team.

  2. The student-athlete and the student-athlete’s family will be responsible to work with the school district of residence and make all logistical arrangements related to the student-athlete’s participation in the sport.

  3. York Tech will not be responsible for transportation to or from tryouts, practices, and games, nor will it provide locker room facilities.

  4. Required documents such as physicals, re-certification forms, emergency cards, etc. will not be collected, managed, or tracked by York Tech for sports not offered by York Tech or its co-op agreement partners.

  5. York Tech will not provide athletics trainer services for these student-athletes, and the student-athletes will not be covered by York Tech’s athletics insurance plan.

  6. York Tech will not distribute or collect another school’s equipment or be financially responsible for lost, damaged, stolen, or missing equipment.

  7. Student-athletes and their families will need to share grade and attendance information with the Athletics Department of the school district for eligibility purposes.

  8. Student-athletes will be responsible for meeting the attendance and academic requirements set forth by the school district of residence.

  9. Uniforms or other athletics apparel from the school district of residence may not be worn during York Tech’s school day, since doing so would be a violation of York Tech’s professional dress policy.

  10. Student-athletes will not be eligible for York Tech letters, varsity jackets, Hall of Fame induction, the end-of-year All-Sports Program, or any other types of athletics recognition based solely on the merits of their participation in sports at a school district of residence. (They will still be eligible for athletics recognition at York Tech if they participate in sports offered by York Tech or York Tech’s co-op agreement partners.)
